As an industry, we have a huge challenge to recruit, retain and develop the hard working and talented people needed to deliver major infrastructure projects planned over the coming years.
It means we need to think differently and find answers to the difficult questions we face. For example, what are the barriers to creating a more diverse workforce, what stops people wanting to join the construction industry and how can we get more women working in senior positions?
There are many more questions, so we have to be ready to listen and find solutions.
The driver for change is set out in the industrial strategy, Construction 2025, with the aim that construction is ‘an industry that is known for its talented and diverse workforce’.
We held an industry debate ‘changing the face of construction’ so we could explore the challenges together and stimulate new ways of thinking.
We’re also working with supply chain partners to improve mutual understanding and deliver better outcomes, while partnering with industry initiatives, local communities and charities that promote construction and opportunities for diverse candidates.
But leadership starts with each and every one of us. It’s through embracing differences and creating an inclusive culture that we can change how we work for the better.
