Building Information Modeling/ Virtual Design & Construction
The ability to visualise and analyse project information through BIM helps us to reduce risk and bring greater certainty to project cost and delivery schedules. We’re using digital technologies to build confidence with our clients and subcontractor partners, from the design stage right through delivery.
Since 2011, Skanska has undertaken a series of design and build contracts to deliver a range of refurbishments and upgrades at the University Hospital in Coventry. We have completed projects from major clinical refurbishments, such as for nuclear medicine and cardio catheter laboratories, to building new roads and car parks.
Our ability to de-risk these projects, optimise spend and deliver on time are all crucial factors in helping us to deliver – with BIM crucial to our success.
Detailed scans to detailed plans
Using adapted 3D scanning hardware, our team has created highly accurate models in Revit of the ceiling voids and all associated incumbent infrastructure. The model has been integrated with the as-installed drawings and augmented with 360-degree video captured at the point of scanning.
With this comprehensive visualisation tool, we have developed a detailed understanding of the infrastructure systems and how the works need to be managed in order to avoid interruption to hospital operations. We’re able to produce highly specific, relevant and accurate schedules of works so our teams can determine exactly what is in the ceiling void, how the systems relate and how much space there is to complete the work.
Refining delivery to remove risk
The process is being further refined with each new project we deliver. Working with our supply chain partners, we have adapted scanners to suit internal areas, refined the laser wavelength and learnt how to identify errors in the scan caused by over reflective services.
We approach each new project at the University Hospital with the information we need, sharing it in a clear and visual format with our client and supply chain partners so they can clearly understand the planned works.
Using BIM helps us to manage risk and create opportunities, helping to bring in projects on time and budget with minimum disruption to clinical staff and patients.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to visualise the design conceptually which gives us confidence that the programme will be met as the devil is in the detail.”
