Designed to be a landmark for the community
The Mansfield Hospitals development covered three hospitals in Mansfield, UK, including the new 920-bed Kings Mill Acute Hospital. The re-development of existing facilities at Kings Mill created a single unified hospital made up of 28 new wards – 50% in single rooms – new Diagnostic and Treatment and Women & Children’s Centres, a new Emergency Care and Assessment Centre with an out of hours GP service, plus an extensive Education and Training Centre.
Architecturally, the development's exciting design created a major civic presence for the area, in tune with the latest thinking on healthcare planning. The design is dedicated to the wellbeing of patients, visitors and staff, with deep natural light in all areas and intuitive wayfinding.
The second hospital covered by the project agreement, Mansfield Community Hospital, was also designed to be a landmark for the community it serves, with greatly improved access for patients and visitors. At the third, Newark General Hospital, we are providing maintenance and facilities management. The development also includes fully integrated hard and soft facilities management services throughout the concession period.
In September 2012, Skanska sold its equity investments in the Central Nottinghamshire Hospital, the Royal Derby Hospital and the University Hospital, Coventry, to co-investor Innisfree for GB£66m, aboout SEK 715m.

An important innovation is the geothermal heating and cooling system we have installed at Kings Mill. The system is the largest geothermal lake loop in Europe and will meet all of the hospital's needs for cooling, and support the gas heating system when the capacity is available, saving 9,600MWh of gas and electricity a year, worth more than £150,000.
A network of heat exchangers submerged in a nearby reservoir is connected to 42 heat pumps capable of producing 5.4MW of cooling and 5MW of heating, which regulate the temperature in the hospital.
Skanska consulted local preservation and wildlife groups and the heat exchangers were installed during the winter to minimize disturbance. A floating reed bed has been added to conceal and protect the exchangers and to create new habitats for wildlife.
As a result of a life cycle assessment of initial capital costs against improved operational efficiencies and lower maintenance overheads, we created a new energy centre, which includes heating, refrigeration and steam plants. The geothermal system was also based on a sound long-term investment, with capital repaid in under 10 years.
