Skanska was engaged to join an integrated team responsible for the design, planning, engineering and construction of a new 400-metre steel viaduct at Borough Market, west of London Bridge station, aimed at easing train congestion and increasing the flow of trains through the station.

Developing the projectSkanska worked in partnership with Network Rail to develop the scheme from initial concept stage through GRIP 4 & 5 producing a detailed design and cost plan, and identifying suppliers for the work packages.
Constructing the projectThe major challenge of this project was working in a busy area of London in a congested site in close proximity to both the existing operational railway and the public. In addition to the viaduct, construction work also included demolition of existing buildings to make way for the new rail structure, as well as the temporary relocation of Borough Market to an adjacent area as well as the removal, refurbishment and reconstruction of the existing cast iron market structure. One highlight of this project was the launching of a 1,500-tonne, 70-metre rail bridge into position over Borough Street.
Additional informationThird party liaison was a crucially important element to this project. The Skanska project manager has taken the lead in negotiating and communicating with the local trades and businesses including the stall holders of the historic Borough Market.
