Network Rail is building a Fixed Telecommunications Network to provide a platform to support its ongoing GSM-R (Global System for Mobile communications – Rail) network and operational railway circuits across England, Scotland and Wales. The network scheduled for completion in 2012, and Network Rail’s operational railway circuits; information technology data traffic and business telephony traffic will subsequently be migrated to the FTN. Skanska is currently employed by Network Rail installing the nationwide track side transmission masts and equipment required for the new driver communications system.

The Network Rail FTN-GSMR project was presented with a CEEQUAL Excellent Award at the launch of the CEEQUAL Term Assessment Scheme at the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The ‘Excellent’ rating is the highest rating available under the CEEQUAL scheme, which promotes best practice in sustainability for civil engineering projects and provides a benchmark for environmental performance across the industry.
They are one of the first projects to gain the Award in the United Kingdom and achieved a score of 76% which is currently the highest scoring CEEQUAL Term Assessment Award in the UK.
