Comprehensive tunnelling solutions

We specialise in all types of tunnelling, and use a variety of excavation techniques, from hard rock excavation – either by drilling or blasting using explosives – to the latest tunnel boring machine technology.

We can do it all, from hydro-demolition – using high pressure water jets – to tunnel and shaft works. We also specialise in refurbishing and capping shafts and are experts in ground reinforcement and support.

We’re active members of industry bodies too, including the British Tunnelling Society and Tunnel Skills and are always looking to learn and share best practice. 

Projects in the UK and Ireland

We have completed a range of projects in the road, rail, utility, water and mining sectors, and are continuing to work on new projects.

We are constructing a 32km electricity super-highway under the streets of London for National Grid, while also working on flagship Crossrail projects at Paddington, Bond Street and Royal Oak Portal. Since 2005 we have been working on the Tara Mines project in Ireland, controlling surface water ingress into the zinc mines - the fifth largest in the world.

London Power Tunnels

As part of a joint venture we are constructing 32km of high voltage electricity cable tunnels for National Grid, through the heart of London.

The London Power Tunnels project will help National Grid meet ever-increasing energy demands in the capital, preparing the infrastructure to support the network for future generations. We are responsible for the design, construction and commissioning of the new cable tunnels.

The tunnels, which are bored by machines, vary in size between and 3m and 4m and can be anywhere between 12m to 60m underground. We also built 14 access and ventilation shafts along the route, as well as buildings for electrical equipment at the top of the shafts.

Between 200 and 250 people are working on the project at any one time, with completion set for 2018.
