An award-winning new school

We have won a number of awards for our work on Woodlands School in Basildon, Essex which we designed, built and now maintain.

Built in 2014, the £26 million school is home to 1,500 pupils aged 11 to 16. An additional £1.8 million vocational training facility was handed over in 2015, where students learn hair, beauty and building skills.

The new state-of-the-art secondary school has a floor area of 11,000sqm. It also has an all-weather sports pitch with artificial grass, which is also used by community and sporting clubs.

Versatile building

The main building is focused around a double-height central atrium, linked to a performance hall, with a moving partition that allows the two spaces to be joined together.

Every classroom in the school has interactive whiteboards. Its halls are equipped with overhead projectors and screens, plus DVD, satellite TV and sound systems.

Award-winning approach to building information modelling (BIM)

In 2013, Skanska picked up a British Construction Industry (BCI) Award in the BIM Project Application (Building) category for this school. At the Heating and Ventilation News Awards 2014, Woodlands School won the BIM initiative of the year accolade. The project won the same category in Education Estates Awards 2014.

Senior design manager, Jeremy Wagge, said there were two main reasons for embracing BIM on the project: “Primarily, we wanted to improve the construction experience. But we saw it would also really help us to maintain the building in the future. This was important, given the 25-year maintenance contract.

“BIM gives us the chance to put everything together in 3D in advance of any building work taking place. It’s a superb collaboration tool.”

Facilities management

Skanska is providing a range of facilities management services, planned and reactive, at the school until 2037. These include: maintaining the fabric of the buildings, mechanical and electrical engineering, cleaning, security and grounds maintenance.

Our highly skilled team also maintains a number of other schools in Essex.
