“The fact that Skanska builds for a better society is what really set the company apart from others when I was looking for my internship. I find it really rewarding that the work has a big impact on people’s lives – from building schools and hospitals to transport infrastructure – Skanska’s projects are not just landmarks, they make a difference for people every day. It’s great to have the opportunity to be a part of that so early on in my construction career and I want to build for a better society.”
Teni is based at the St Giles Circus site in London, where Skanska has been awarded a £142 million development contract. She said: “I’m shadowing the role of construction site manager, so I get a full overview of what it takes to run the site day-to-day; overseeing all issues, documenting each day’s activities and looking after health and safety, as well as contractors, clients and the general public. Construction is so friendly and I get to meet new people every day. Each day is different, so there’s always a new challenge to get involved in.”
For Teni, the graduate experience is about insights into her future career. She added: “It offers such a great overview of what you can do. To see things in practice has really helped me understand all the options and think about which career path is right for me. I have learned so much.
“Going forward, it will put me in a strong position to secure a job at the end of my degree, as I’ll have plenty of practical experience to complement my studies. I am now even considering working toward a masters or working abroad – hopefully continuing to achieve my career goals with Skanska.”
