Kvaerner Construction has received independent certification for its latest design concept for highly-dependable low-cost all-concrete Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) tanks from the world-renowned authority Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
Nick Davies, who heads the company’s LNG business, commented: "This independent endorsement is a great boost for our drive into the LNG tank market. We can offer a full design, procurement, construction and commissioning service for our prestressed-concrete storage tank. Its already proven technology is now also backed the DNV certificate. Coupled with our own worldwide engineering experience, this means that clients can confidently choose the Kvaerner Cryocrete tanks without risking new or untried technology."
The design is confirmed as complying with all applicable UK, European and US standards for storing Liquefied Natural Gas at temperatures below -160 degrees centigrade.
The double-walled pre-stressed concrete full-containment tank has a successful operational history stretching back 45 years. Now enhanced by the latest computer-generated design systems and specifications, the Kvaerner Cryocrete tank offers technical and economic advantages over alternative steel products:
· Cost savings through using concrete, generally locally available and requiring less specialised construction skills than steel fabrication;
· Faster construction using simpler technology;
· High strength and stability;
· Long durability and excellent safety characteristics.
Nick Davies and his team are now actively marketing these tanks into the rapidly expanding LNG market, particularly in Iberia and India. All the design development work has been carried out in-house by Kvaerner Technology.
