The Fleming Award

The Fleming Award is given annually to commemorate the life and work of Dr Ken Fleming and to recognise excellence in the practical application of geotechnics in a project or a part of a project.

About the award

The Fleming Award recognises excellence in the practical application of geotechnics in a project. The award was established in 2000 to commemorate Cementation Skanska’s late chief engineer Ken Fleming. The Fleming competition is run by the British Geotechnical Association and sponsored by Cementation Skanska, who also donate a prize sum each year.

About Ken Fleming

Ken Fleming, a visiting Professor at Queen's University in Belfast, worked for Cementation from 1958 until his death in 2001. He was the principle author of Piling Engineering, which has become a standard reference book in this field.

His work and approach to constantly seeking improvement and innovation in geotechnics continues to inspire the present generation of Cementation designers and engineers who carry on his tradition of staying at the forefront of geotechnical practice.
