MOD Whitehall

  • The Ministry of Defence (MOD) Whitehall project entailed a complete refurbishment of the Grade II listed building
  • Enclosed courtyards were created within the MOD Whitehall building
  • Period features were retained within the refurbishment of the MOD Whitehall building
  • Modern facilities were seamlessly incorporated into the refurbishment of the Grade II listed building

Following the completion of a major refurbishment at the Ministry of Defence (MoD) strategic tri-service headquarters in London, we now provide facilities management services to MoD Whitehall.

Prestige refurbishment

This was a complex and prestigious refurbishment, carried out in a Grade II listed 100,000sqm property.

We worked across 13 floors – 10 above ground and three below – completely refurbishing the building, enabling the working environment to move from cellular offices to open-plan workspaces.

We also upgraded all building services, including comfort cooling for offices and a new IT network. The new communal spaces include a library, restaurant, business and press suite, as well as a crèche.

A complex project

Major logistical challenges, due to limited parking and storage, were also overcome.

The work was done in two phases. This allowed the MoD’s 3,000+ employees to continue working as the project progressed. Disruption was minimised by preparing four existing buildings for temporary occupation, before upgrading the interior of the Whitehall building.

Our positive working relationship has led to further refurbishment works, including a two-year £23 million construction programme.

Ongoing management services

We are providing a range of facilities management services until 2025. This includes looking after the fabric of the building. We also carry out mechanical and electrical engineering work, where required, together with statutory inspections.

Condition-based maintenance has also been introduced to monitor and maintain plant equipment. This is an innovative move from traditional, time-based maintenance that delivers labour and life-cycle cost savings.

We support 3,500 people in the building, working core hours on weekdays with a 24/7 call-out function out of hours.

A collaborative approach is at the heart of everything we do at MoD Whitehall. We have an ISO 44001 certified relationship with the client. ISO 44001 is an international collaborative working standard.

Sustainable and cost effective solutions

Our proactive work at MoD Whitehall saved 2.8 million kg in carbon emissions in one year – 85 per cent via reductions in electricity usage.

The customer is making annual savings of over £400,000, thanks to measures we introduced. These include new lighting solutions, increased use of passive infrared sensor detectors, more efficient lifts, timers on fan coil units and altering the timings for heating and chilling facilities.
