Taking a leadership position

As an industry, we face a huge challenge to recruit, retain and develop the hard working and talented people we need to deliver the major infrastructure projects planned for the coming years.

Thinking differently

This means we must think differently and find answers to the difficult questions. These questions include:

  • what are the barriers to creating a more diverse workforce?
  • what stops people wanting to join the construction industry?
  • how can we get more women working in senior positions?

There are many more questions, so we have to be ready to listen and find solutions.

Culture for change

The UK government's construction 2025: strategy is the driver for change. It sets out that construction is 'an industry that is known for its talented and diverse workforce'.

We held an industry debate 'changing the face of construction' to explore the challenges together and stimulate new ways of thinking.

We're also working with supply chain partners to improve mutual understanding and deliver better outcomes, while partnering with industry initiatives, local communities and charities that promote construction and opportunities for diverse candidates.

Everyone is responsible for inclusion

But leadership starts with each and every one of us. It's through embracing differences and creating an inclusive culture that we can change how we work for the better.
