Skanska worked as a capital delivery partner for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water during the AMP6 and AMP7 (Asset Management Plan) periods.

Working in partnership with Arcadis, we took a collaborative approach that supported Welsh Water’s alliance model. Our work focused on highly complex non-infrastructure capital projects, such as:

  • Prioress Mill Pumping Station – a new raw water pumping station along the River Usk, where the team’s design input led to significant energy savings
  • Bryn Cowlyd Water Treatment Works – development of the detailed design for the upgraded process that integrates with the existing plant. Serves a population of nearly 100,000 people
  • Cog Moors Wastewater Treatment Works – a new Advanced Anaerobic Digestion and Thermal Hydrolysis plant, where the team delivered impressive cost, time and carbon efficiencies
  • Lower Neuadd Dam Discontinuance – removal of more than 60,000 tonnes of material that allows the River Taff to flow naturally
  • Swansea and Nash wind turbines – renewable energy generation contributing to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a smaller carbon footprint

As a team, we provided collaboration skills and aligned values, which created the foundation for a successful working alliance. This was combined with our experience in aligned sectors, including rail and highways, from which we were able to transfer and share best practice.

During our time working for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, we pioneered the use of new technologies, such as the fully immersive 360-degree BIM igloo, which reduced and optimised design work during construction and handover. We were also an early adopter of drones, which we deployed for surveying assets that were difficult to access, improving site safety for our teams and reducing costs.
