Our A428 project team are celebrating another major milestone this spring with the opening of the new Roxton Road Bridge on the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet scheme. Watch the drone footage here. This follows the recent opening of a newly constructed bridge joining the A428 and B1040 roads at Eltisley Junction.
The new bridge forms a key part of the new Roxton Road link, providing a safe and accessible route over the A421 for vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders. It spans the new west and eastbound slip roads and includes a new free-flow link road running beneath it from the A421 to the A1. This replaces the old bridge which will be demolished in the coming weeks.
Willie McCormick, Skanska’s A428 Project Director said: “Roxton Road Bridge will be the first local road on the scheme to be handed over to Bedford Borough Council and it plays a vital part in unlocking the rest of this section of works. Our teams have worked extremely hard to get to this point and have delivered yet another major milestone.
“Our focus now shifts to completing the remaining section of the Roxton Road link which is expected to open to traffic later this month.”
The A428 between St Neots and Caxton Gibbet is the only stretch of single carriageway between the M1 near Milton Keynes and Cambridge. Skanska, on behalf of National Highways, is upgrading this section to dual carriageway which will include 18 bridges and three junctions.
It is an important link between the M1 and the M11, connecting the communities of Bedford, St Neots, Cambridge and Cambourne.
With over 25,000 vehicles travelling along this congested section of road every day and considerable growth in local housing and job growth expected in the region the scheme upgrade is much needed.
