360° cameras

In 2015, as part of our on-going drive to create an injury-free environment on our sites, we introduced the use of 360° all-round visibility cameras on a selection of mobile construction plant.

The all-round visibility cameras aid plant-operators to see workers and pedestrian movements within a five-metre radius and assist in overcoming blind spots. This helps to reduce the risk of accidental contact between site operatives and plant – one of the top three fatal risks on construction sites.

What was the problem?

During operation of large plant, just a momentary lapse in concentration or poor visibility to a single side of the plant can result in a fatal collision between plant and people.

Although physical segregation of plant and people is the priority, we recognised that where plant and people are required to work in close proximity, improved visibility for the driver could significantly reduce the risk of collision.

What did we do?

We worked with our supply chain to develop 360° all-round visibility cameras which can be applied to a large range of plant and provide visibility to a distance of five-metres all around the plant.

Following the development of the cameras, we worked closely with the supply chain to help them implement and benefit from the new standard.

What was the outcome?

The 360° all-round visibility camera standard has significantly increased the control over operations involving a close plant and people interface.
