Planning for safety: Waterloo station

London Waterloo is the busiest station in the UK, with more than half a million passengers accessing the site every day and trains departing or arriving almost every minute during peak times. We have been contracted to plan and deliver major improvements at London Waterloo and other busy inner London stations.

Using heat maps

BIM technologies will be used to improve the safety of workers, with schedules shown in a 3D model. When staff are working on the tracks during station shutdowns, the interactive model will show site logistics and supply train movements at fifteen minute intervals highlighting any safety concerns. Safety critical areas will automatically become exclusion zones either side of scheduled supply train arrivals and departures.

The rail team in Skanska's civil engineering business has developed a mobile app for easier gathering of safety concerns. As issues are logged, the app embeds the details and location data in the 3D model.

We can use this information to create 'heat maps' that display the concentration, frequency and severity of risks in context of the site.

This will help with our aim to make sure that everyone on our site goes home safely at the end of the working day.
