The HVDC framework is part of National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade – the largest overhaul of the UK’s electricity grid in generations. These upgrade infrastructure projects will scale up the grid and update existing networks – connecting more clean energy to homes and businesses.
The converter civil works supply chain framework, valued at £12bn, is the third and final piece of the HVDC scope to be procured by National Grid. Skanska has been appointed to Lot 1 of the framework, valued at £9.07bn, to deliver civils work for converter stations.
The contract runs for a five-year period, with the potential to extend for a further three years. The framework covers both confirmed and anticipated projects, including Eastern Green Link 3, Eastern Green Link 4, LionLink, as well as other similar projects.
Andrew English, Executive Vice President, Skanska UK, said: “Energy security is a top priority for the UK. We’re looking forward to working collaboratively with National Grid in delivering critical HVDC infrastructure that will support the country’s future energy needs. We’ll draw on our UK and global expertise, providing specialist civils construction knowledge, capacity and capability.”
The HVDC supply chain framework will support the UK’s drive towards decarbonising the electricity grid by 2035 and ultimately decarbonising the UK’s economy by 2050.
Zac Richardson, Chief Engineer and Offshore Delivery Director of Strategic Infrastructure at National Grid, said: “This marks a major step forward in delivering the UK’s future energy network. This investment not only underpins the transition to a more secure, independent and low-carbon energy future, but will also support tens of thousands of UK jobs, boost regional supply chains and strengthen our construction and engineering sectors. By building strategic, long-term partnerships with leading UK-based contractors, we’re ensuring the UK is ready to meet the growing demand for electricity with a resilient and modern network.”
Skanska has a long relationship with National Grid, having previously completed projects together including as a member of the South-East England Substations Alliance (SEESA). Other schemes include the seven-year London Power Tunnels upgrade and the River Humber gas pipeline replacement project.
Working collaboratively with customers and operating equipment manufacturers (OEMs), Skanska integrates design and construction capabilities – providing core building, civil engineering and utilities expertise. In-house teams also offer specialist piling and ground engineering, fabrications and MEP (mechanical, electrical and public health engineering) services.
