Skanska Construction has won a £16 million contract from Fenwick to construct a five-storey department store in the centre of Canterbury.

The 116,000-square foot store is the centrepiece of a major redevelopment of Canterbury’s Whitefriars Shopping Centre by Land Securities.

The Fitzroy Robinson designed store will feature external walls of reconstituted stonework, high quality local brick and glazed screen entrances. The scope of the work includes internal finishes to the customer sales areas, a hair and beauty salon, customer restaurants, café, staff restaurant, offices and back of house facilities.

Subsidiary company Cementation Foundations Skanska carried out piling work for a 220-metre retaining wall.

Consultants include Gardiner Theobald, cost consultant, Waterman Partnership, structural engineer and Waterman Gore, mechanical and electrical engineer.
