KVAERNER WINS £60.5M HONG KONG ROAD CONTRACT

Press release 25/02/1999 00:00 CET

Kvaerner Construction’s Hong Kong-based associate, Gammon Construction, has won a £60.5 million (HK$775.6m) contract to build a 2.2 kilometre coastal road in Hong Kong.

Gammon was awarded the Tsing Yi North Coastal Road job after offering alternative viaduct designs and a shorter construction time which will allow the dual two-lane road to open four months ahead of schedule in September 2001.

Associated slip roads and link roads, a sub-control centre, four pedestrian subways as well as noise reduction facilities are also included in the contract which was awarded by the Highways Department.

A spokesperson for the Highways Department said: "The commissioning of the new airport in July last year has generated a substantial amount of traffic between Lantau and Tsuen Wan, routing through north Tsing Yi.

"When completed in late 2001, the Tsing Yi North Coastal Road will form part of the principal access to the Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok and meet the continuous growth of traffic demand arising from the airport and new town developments in Lantau."
