Skanska to build Radisson SAS Hotel at Stansted Airport

Press release 07/12/2001 00:00 CET

Skanska has negotiated a £28.6 million contract to build a Radisson SAS Hotel on a five-acre site adjacent to the main terminal at Stansted Airport.

The four star 350-room hotel will take 18 months to construct and includes a restaurant, bars, leisure centre with swimming pool and gym, conference and banqueting facilities. There are also plans for a second phase which will extend the hotel by a further 150 rooms if Radisson SAS decide to proceed at a future date.

The hotel will be the first at Stansted to have direct pedestrian access to the newly extended terminal building and features a glass exterior design complete with an eye catching five-storey atrium in the centre housing the reception.

Skanska has been involved in the project from the start, taking Radisson SAS’s requirements from the concept stage and appointing architect Aukett Europe to develop a detailed design based on agreed cost parameters. Working closely with Radisson SAS, the two companies have designed a hotel that meets the full needs of the operator, eradicating any buildability issues before work starts on site.

The style of the hotel’s design is also complementary to Stansted’s award winning Foster designed terminal building.

Skanska has also assisted with the production of detailed information which BAA Lynton, the property development arm of Stansted’s owners BAA, will use to obtain final planning permission. Outline permission for a hotel development has already been granted and BAA Lynton will submit a full detailed application shortly.

For Skanska, it is a continuation of a relationship in the UK that saw it build the Radisson SAS Hotel at Manchester Airport.

Construction work will start in the spring once planning permission is granted and the hotel is scheduled for completion by the end of 2003.
