The Skanska British Army Rugby League Tour kicks off with a win

Press release 07/07/2004 00:00 CET

It’s common knowledge that not all of Britain’s sporting heroes have been at the top of their game lately.

Thank heavens then that the Skanska British Army Rugby League team is bolstering the pride of British Sport. Today’s 34-14 drubbing of the New South Wales Combined Services side in Sydney set the 10th Anniversary Tour up for an outstanding conclusion.

Next stop, Townsville and the Test Match against the Wallabies Army Rugby League Team on 10th July.

Skanska is lead sponsor of the tour and has a direct association with the team through Martin Coyd, one of the company’s Health & Safety Training Managers and a founder of the squad 10 years ago.

Martin Coyd said, ‘The squad has been going from strength to strength over recent years in line with the growth of Rugby League as a major sport in the UK. The team are delighted to have the support of Skanska and it has given us an extra lift going into this weekend’s all important Test Match.’

Indeed, the tour has also had Parliamentary Approval with David Hinchliffe MP receiving the team at the House of Commons on behalf of the All Party Rugby Group.

The Army have kindly donated several signed items of tour memorabilia, which Skanska will auction in aid of their two charities upon the squad’s, hopefully, successful return.
