KVAERNER CEMENTATION CONSTRUCTING EUROPE’S LARGEST NEW MINE

Kvaerner Cementation has started work on a £30.4 million contract to design construct and equip Europe’s largest new Lead Zinc underground mine.

The Lisheen mine in Killoran Co. Tipperary, Ireland is being constructed on behalf of Minorco who are responsible for developing the mine with their joint venture partners Ivernia. When completed in Summer 1999, the mine will have an ore throughput equivalent to 1.5 million tonnes per year.

The mine which will be accessed by a main decline and will have one ancillary shaft, three vent raises and an underground development extending to around 5km.

Under the contract, Kvaerner Cementation will also design, procure, install and commission all major underground facilities including rock handling, ventilation, pumping and electrical distribution.
