Kvaerner Cementation Foundations has launched a new geotechnical engineering award in honour of its long-serving chief engineer, Ken Fleming.

The Fleming Award will be administered by the British Geotechnical Society and presented to the project team which demonstrates a high level of excellence in geotechnical design and construction.

Ken, who is the society’s Skempton Gold Medal holder and the current visiting professor at Belfast’s Queen’s University, has worked for Cementation Foundations since 1958. Kvaerner Construction’s piling and ground engineering specialists decided to sponsor the award in recognition of Ken’s excellent contribution to geotechnical design and construction over the last 40 years.

Commenting on the award, he said: “I’m pleased that the company has decided to put money forward to encourage engineers in the pursuit of excellence. I am surprised, but equally delighted, for my name to be connected with anything which stimulates young people to develop themselves.”

Ken will present the award, together with £3,000 prize money, to the first team to win the award at a ceremony in London in September.
