CTRL HOARDINGS GIVEN CHILDREN’S TOUCH

Press release 21/07/1999 00:00 CET

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link site in Ashford will be a brighter place this summer thanks to scores of local pupils and a mural competition.

Children aged between five and 15 from 28 schools in the town responded to a challenge from Kvaerner Construction and Rail Link Engineering, the partners building the 15km route through Ashford, to create murals for display on the site hoardings.

They were given wood dyes, two 8ft by 4ft hoarding boards and overalls and the chance to win anything from a personal computer to £125 for their school or organisation.

The winners have just been announced by Ashford’s mayor and the murals, which are all based around the Channel Tunnel, are already in place.

The winning children, all of primary school age, are from the Egerton Church of England School based just outside Ashford.

Assisting the mayor in judging the entries were Alastair Cathcart, Rail Link Engineering’s project director, Kvaerner Construction’s project director John Holloway and David Balckburn, a director of Kvaerner Construction’s UK Civil Engineering division.
