National Assembly for Wales building for Skanska

Press release 19/01/2001 00:00 CET

National Assembly for Wales Finance Minister, Edwina Hart, has today (January 18) announced that Skanska Construction Group will manage the construction of its prestigious Assembly Building in Cardiff.

The landmark £13 million building is on a prominent waterside site in Cardiff Bay and has been designed by renowned architects the Richard Rogers Partnership. Access and visibility are important features of the building which will have a significant amount of glazing to emphasize the transparent way in which decision making in Wales is carried out.

Public access to the area will also be improved with the boardwalk on the seaward side of Cardiff Bay being extended and the fully landscaped.

Internally the building will include a debating chamber, committee rooms and ancillary facilities while a bridge link to the National Assembly for Wales’ adjacent building, Crickhowell House, will also be constructed.

The award of this significant contract continues Skanska’s longstanding presence in South Wales. Over the last 25 years it has constructed landmark buildings including the third Library building at National Library in Aberystwyth; Chepstow Neighbourhood Health Unit; the Celtic Manor Hotel in Newport and the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea.

Work on the Assembly Building starts immediately with Skanska Construction Group due to complete its project early in 2003.
