Kvaerner Cementation Foundations (KCF) has won a contract to carry out piling work for the new Scottish Enterprise headquarters building, *Glasgow’s biggest-ever pre-let office development.
Work is now advancing on the £500,000 ground engineering scheme awarded by main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine at Atlantic Quay, Broomielaw, the city-centre redevelopment site which has been selected as the new home for Scotland’s national development agency.
To form the foundations of the 9650 square metre prestigious development, KCF is sinking 74 load-bearing piles of up to 1,500mm diameter some 25 metres deep. In addition, Kvaerner Construction’s foundation specialists are piling a perimeter retaining wall, using their newly patented Cased Continuous Flight Auger system.
This was chosen as the most effective way piling next to adjacent buildings in a highly built-up area adjoining the River Clyde and close to neighbouring offices.
Under this method, a protective steel casing surrounds the auger as it is screwed into the ground, to minimise ground disturbance. The company will install 65 metres of contiguous piled walling around the site boundary, using piles of 600 and 750 mm diameter, 18 metres deep, with a retained height of up to seven metres.
