MAJOR CONTRACT FOR KVAERNER HK ASSOCIATE

Press release 11/09/1998 00:00 CET

Kvaerner Construction’s Hong Kong-based associate, Gammon Construction, has been awarded a £27.5 million contract by the Architectural Services Department of the SAR Government to build a multi-purpose District Community Centre in Sai Ying Pun.

Work has begun on the 3,300-square metre site demolishing two existing buildings behind a retained facade and verandah which have been listed as Grade I monuments by the Antiquities Advisory Board. These will undergo structural restoration and strengthening and architectural improvements as part of the contract.

Once demolition is complete work will begin on constructing the 10-storey building, which will have a reinforced concrete structure constructed on piles and pilecaps, designed in-house. Other elements of the contract include associated geotechnical works, site formation, finishing works and building services.

Scheduled for completion at the end of 2000, the new centre, with a total floor area of 21,000 sq metres, will house separate hostels for single people and the mentally handicapped, a day nursery, day activity centre, a home for the elderly, an educational training centre and an outreach social work team office.
