Kvaerner Construction has been awarded the first phase of a £29 million contract for the design and construction of the shell for the ground transport interchange (GTI) at Manchester Airport.
The project includes an Intermodal Transport Hub Building – a central point for all of the airport’s ground transport – a new coach station and check-in halls, a six storey office building and a 200-metre tunnel linking to the airport’s new railway station and the Manchester Metro system.
The steel frame, fully glazed hub building will include a passenger interchange, check-in areas, baggage handling facilities and ticket information as well as retail and catering areas. It will also house the new coach station. Externally new access roads and stands and manoeuvring space for 12 coaches will be constructed.
The six-storey office building will be constructed with a steel frame and pre-cast concrete floors, clad with glazed curtain walling and rain screening. A “skywalk” will link the main airport building to the second floor of the office building, which will also contain a cafeteria.
Kvaerner Construction is currently completing stage one. Stage two-detail design and procurement will start later this month. Construction work on site is expected to start in March 2001 with shell and core completion in summer 2002.
