Skanska has marked the completion of South Essex College’s new campus. Over 2,000 students can now look forward to starting the next academic year in a modern building, thanks to Skanska.
The £45 million college, located 150 metres from Grays train station, offers training on everything from engineering and construction to hair and beauty. It houses impressive art and design studios, an auditorium and outdoor amphitheatre which are ideal spaces for students to perform.
The local community will also benefit from the new facilities, with health spa and Waves fine dining restaurant open to the public.
Principal and Chief Executive at South Essex College, Angela O’Donoghue, said: “We are thrilled that the new campus is complete and now the countdown can really begin to September, when the first students start their courses.
“Specialist teams are now in the campus to install all the industry-standard equipment to make sure students learn the up-to-date skills that employers need. This will take place in July and August.”
Skanska Managing Director Paul Heather said it was fantastic to be involved: “For us, it’s not just about creating great buildings, it’s about creating a great legacy for the local community. We hope this new campus will help inspire future generations of young people. It’s green, it’s innovative, and it will be a great place to study.”
The campus is expected to achieve a BREEAM Very Good rating because of its low impact on the environment. Modern construction techniques such as 3D modelling and prefabricated modules were used to help create a green building.
