Costain Skanska JV to exhibit at Skills London 2012

An event aimed at attracting and encouraging young people to consider a career in the construction sector is being supported by joint venture partners Costain Skanska.

The Skills London 2012 event is expected to attract over 30,000 visitors is taking place on November 23-24 at London’s Excel Arena. The two day event promises to offer students and visitors a brilliant hands-on experience to learn about careers, jobs and training opportunities across London. Visitors will get the chance to touch, feel and experience a large range of available careers from a large group of organisations.

The aim of the event is to motivate young people between the ages of 15-24 to consider a career in construction by using activities demonstrated by the exhibitors. The activities are designed by the companies that are attending and are tailor-made to showcase their particular sector.

Other activities include employability workshops and mock interviews to give attendees an understanding of what an employer is looking for in an employee.

Costain and Skanska have a strong history of working together in joint venture and are currently working together on three live Crossrail projects as joint ventures, following the successful completion of two previous contracts.

Val Thompstone, Costain’s Apprenticeship and NVQ Manager, will be on hand to talk about careers in the construction industry and she will be joined by engineers from the joint venture to talk about their experience of working on Crossrail projects.

Commenting on the event, Val said: “We’re really looking forward to it. This is an ideal opportunity for us to demonstrate the skills we possess and begin an engagement process with young people who might be interested in a career in the construction industry.”

Eunice Fortune, Skanska’s Community Relations Manager, added: “The construction industry has some of the most exciting career opportunities and job prospects around. Attending one of these events gives young people the chance to go window shopping for a wide range of different careers, gather useful information and plan for the future.”
