Kvaerner Cleveland Bridge has won the contract to fabricate and erect the structural steel shell of a new hi-tech retail and leisure centre in Scotland.
Work has begun on site erecting some 1,400 tonnes of structural and architectural steel to form the centrepiece of Fountain Park, Edinburgh, under a £1.4 million award from main contractor Tarmac Building.
All drawing work and steel fabrication is being undertaken at the main yard of Kvaerner Cleveland Bridge in Darlington. The work entails a high degree of sophisticated curved, tubular steelwork for the roofline, designed to reflect the hi-tech interior of Fountain Park, which will contain a range of leisure activities, including a multi-screen cinema, restaurants, bars a nightclub and a ten-pin bowling alley.
Detailed design work has been developed by Kvaerner Cleveland Bridge in close co-operation with consulting engineers Blythe & Blythe of Edinburgh.
Said Brian Rogan, sales manager at Kvaerner Cleveland Bridge, who was closely involved in securing the contract: "As well as high engineering input, we have provided a fast construction programme to meet the cost plan for the programme, based on rapid installation methods."
Steel erection is scheduled for completion by October.
