Skanska has constructed a new £45 million campus in Grays for South Essex College as part of a design and build contract. The centre covers an area of approximately 15,000sqm. Skanska worked with KSS Group, Arup and Turner & Townsend on the project.

The facility meets the BREEAM Very Good rating because of its low impact on the environment. Modern construction techniques such as 3D modelling and prefabricated modules were used to help create a green building. The campus also uses technology such as rainwater harvesting to provide water for the toilet systems and solar panels to provide energy.

The college offers training on everything from engineering and construction to hair and beauty. It houses impressive art and design studios, an auditorium and an outdoor amphitheatre.

Collaborative approach

Skanska worked closely with South Essex College at every stage of the project to ensure it was delivered on time and to a high standard. Presentations and workshops were held to keep the college, local council, residents and businesses informed about the project.

The Deputy Principal and Chief Executive of South Essex College, Anthony McGarel, said: “I believe Skanska has gone the extra mile in creating this fabulous modern educational facility that exceeds the exacting expectations of today’s students...”

Helping the community

The project team took part in a range of voluntary activities in the local area. These included cleaning the local beach, donating Christmas lights and tree planting for Grays town centre, planting flowers and upkeep of the surrounding area and providing environmental tips.

Careers and health and safety presentations were also given to students and staff at the college.
