The City of Edinburgh might be world-famous for its history, but when it comes to looking after its facilities it demands the very latest technology. Skanska’s expertise in using innovations to provide efficient and cost-effective maintenance has meant it is the obvious choice to look after planned and reactive maintenance services at over 130 properties for the City of Edinburgh Council.
The contract covers a varied portfolio of buildings including schools and their connected accommodation, libraries, sports pavilions, day centres, bowling pavilions, workshops, care homes, community venues, civic offices and country park buildings.
To make sure these crucial facilities are maintained in the most efficient and transparent way possible, Skanska uses an app stored on digital devices to log every stage of either a reactive or planned maintenance visit.
Where there are issues with either assets or buildings, these are photographed and immediately sent to the relevant Council contact. The technology gives a real-time picture of all buildings, assets and potential hazards, allowing the customer to make a quick decision and provide a resolution. It also ensures Skanska can provide full statutory compliance to the Council.
By auditing, tagging and maintaining assets throughout a property portfolio with clear transparency, the City of Edinburgh Council can now formulate an accurate property plan with future costs and savings highlighted at an early stage.
This enables the programming of works to be evaluated to ensure that projects can by planned and completed in the most economical way while minimising disruption and maximising the availability of facilities which are vital to the community.

Examples include a lesson in building site safety given in Edinburgh’s Blackhall Primary and Skanska volunteers helping to spruce up the facilities at Lorne School in the city. Meanwhile, Skanska’s Scotland team organised a 12-hour ‘Cyclethon’ to raise funds for the development of The Social Bite Homeless Village in Edinburgh. The keen gardeners among the crew also picked up their tools at Fords Road Care Home to bring order to overgrown hedges and weeds and planted new flora and transformed the space for elderly residents.
