  • Duniface bridge - transported
  • Duniface bridge during construction
  • Installation of Duniface bridge

The project

Network Rail's Levenmouth Rail Link is a major project reconnecting Levenmouth in Fife to the railway for the first time in more than 50 years, bringing more education, work and leisure opportunities to local people. The Duniface footbridge is the first of three new bridges to be constructed along the six-mile rail link.

Cementation Skanska`s fabrications team were awarded the contract for the manufacture and installation of the new bridge by Story Contracting Ltd. At 190 tonnes and 150 metres in length it was a significant exercise in steel fabrication, engineering and logistics.

The solution

Work began in January 2024 at our Bentley Works steel fabrications facility in Doncaster where the complete structure was manufactured in six separate sections. The individual sections ranged from 27 to 31 tonnes each. Once transported to the site they were meticulously assembled over the river and railway, this also included the install of the main bearings. The installation took 14 separate lifts over five days using a 750-tonne mobile crane. All works were carried out in line with the programme and to the highest safety standards.

The outcome

Standing 15 metres above the railway and the River Leven and highly visible from the surrounding neighbourhood, the bridge is a significant local landmark. It carries the main path between the communities of Methilhill and Kennoway with walking and cycle routes offering greater access to local amenities.
