Our expert teams worked closely with Network Rail to overcome complex technical challenges and minimise local disruption in constructing and installing the new Clifton Bridge early in 2026.
The Clifton Bridge replacement project was a vital infrastructure upgrade on the West Coast Main Line near Penrith, spanning the M6 motorway. Under a £43 million contract, Skanska designed, built and installed a new 130-metre three-span steel bridge to replace the existing ageing structure.

From the outset, Skanska worked hand-in-hand with Network Rail to refine design and construction methods that meet strict budget and programme targets. This collaboration was critical in addressing the technical complexity of demolishing the old bridge and installing the new one, which happened during a tight 12-day blockade in January 2026.

Skanska worked closely with National Highways to build a dedicated slip road off the M6 motorway as part of the scheme. This innovative collaboration was essential to minimise construction traffic impacts on local communities, reducing disruption to residents around Penrith and Clifton.

The project team’s meticulous planning included fabricating the new 4200 tonne bridge nearby before moving it into position, ensuring minimal disruption to rail services and motorway users. Engagement with other stakeholders, including local authorities, helped identify environmental sensitivities early, guiding measures to protect local habitats.

Christian Irwin OBE, Network Rail North West and Central region Capital Delivery director, said: “It’s a testament to the hard work of hundreds of people that we’ve been able to install this huge new structure both successfully and speedily. We've been in close contact with National Highways throughout so we could capitalise on that and get the M6 reopen over half a day ahead of schedule to alleviate pressure on local roads.”

Our teams worked in shifts 24/7 across the two-week blockade to achieve both key project milestones, demolishing the former bridge and installing the new one. “Hats off to the entire team for these truly outstanding achievements across both weekends,” said Skanska’s Project Director, Joe Bennett. “When the pressure was on, we worked together with our customer Network Rail, National Highways and partners to deliver two really complex and challenging milestones.”

The first trains passed over the new structure on Thursday 15 January.
