Global expertise
Our UK teams work alongside our Skanska colleagues in Sweden, Norway and North America, sharing knowledge through our International Tunnelling Group, overcoming challenges together. In addition to our core tunnelling capabilities, we offer our own internal specialist services including piling, ground engineering, fabrications, MEP and temporary works design. This is supplemented by our strategic long-term relationships with the specialist supply chain.
Through our collective resources and expert teams, we work with our customers to design tunnelling solutions, that manage risk and deliver agreed project outcomes, even where we need to navigate complex environments. This includes with regard to safety, which is at the heart of everything we do. We implement rigorous safety protocols and foster a culture where every team member is empowered to maintain a secure work environment.
We have delivered, or are in the process of constructing, numerous high-profile tunnelling projects worldwide:
- We are constructing 41km of twin bored running tunnels under the busy streets of London for HS2, using both Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBMs and SCL construction techniques through a variety of soft ground conditions
- Under the Boknafjord in Norway, we are supporting the construction of the E39 Rogfast project, a new twin tube, 10.5m diameter and 26.7km long tunnel. The new tunnel will replace the ferry that is currently used to cross the fjord
- As managing joint venture partner, we designed and constructed a 3.9-mile heavy rail subway in the Wilshire Corridor of Los Angeles, as part of the Purple Line Extension. The team used two slurry pressure balance (SPB) tunnel boring machines for the twin-bored tunnels
We do all of this, while managing complex logistics. This includes at our Logistics Hub in West London. Known as the ‘beating heart of HS2 in London’, the hub is used to transport construction materials and remove spoil via the national rail network – significantly reducing lorry journeys on local roads.
With sustainability integrated into our approach, we work actively to reduce our carbon footprint, use resources efficiently and reduce waste. Our tunnelling solutions contribute to long-term infrastructure resilience that supports thriving communities.
