Education
Our purpose – building for a better society
Decarbonisation & net zero delivery
We're committed to making an active contribution to a sustainable society. In 2019, we were the first major UK contractor to set net-zero emissions targets including our supply chain and in 2025, we have once again been named one of Europe’s Climate Leaders by the Financial Times and data insights firm Statista — marking the fourth year in a row our company has earned this prestigious recognition.
We understand the necessity and challenge of delivering a net-zero strategy in an educational environment; particularly with constraints around cost and time. We have an industry leading approach to Decarbonisation with a wide range of tools, skill and support available to deliver bespoke plans for each and every Skanska customer.
We build a strategy that’s right for you and evolve this to meet changing needs and requirements to ensure you achieve the performance you expect from your property portfolio, estate or building assets.
We use a data-driven approach to boost building performance, to create healthy and productive working environments that benefit developers, owners and occupiers alike.
In essence, that means lower energy usage, less waste, forecastable maintenance costs and maximised availability – and, of course, your statutory and compliance standards met or exceeded.
People at the heart of what we do
Our people are our most valued asset and are at the heart of everything we do. We recruit, train and develop the best people and make sure that our operations teams on campus are supported, by industry experts, to deliver excellent service every day and our customers tell us we handle a challenge really well.
Our teams operate across multiple sectors, all of which bring different challenges. We utilise this experience to support any challenge you may face in your educational establishment.
To be the best, we need the best people. That’s why we offer working conditions and benefits that encourage talented people to join us – and stay. We have some of the highest retention rates across the industry.
We support our staff and those transferring to us under TUPE regulations. During this process we undertake skills analysis, implement training schedules and implement a people engagement plan to support transitioning teams joining Skanska. We support individual development and ensure everyone has access to support wherever needed, whether this is through 1-2-1 engagement or our employee networks and assistance line.
Skanska has been ranked by business magazine Forbes as one of the world’s best employers for the third year running. The exclusive “World’s Best Employers” list is based on surveys with more than 300,000 employees working for multinational companies and institutions in over 50 countries.
Technical Expertise
We ensure our operational delivery teams are highly competent in their individual specialisms and to support them we have a number of centralised support functions such as Environment, Health & Safety, HR and IT, called enabling functions.
By combining both operational and enabling functions expertise at a project level we are able to bring a much wider level of knowledge and proficiency, ensuring that each student, staff member and stakeholder are supported.
We have proven capability and experience in delivering construction and facilities management services in the most complex and demanding environments. This extends from large university campus’, research laboratories, state of the art new builds and heritage building environments.
Operational Efficiency
Our team brings a wealth of technical engineering expertise, with many professionals who have grown their careers from apprentices to senior leaders within Skanska. Their extensive skills are further strengthened by the support of our dedicated specialists who focus on driving operational excellence across projects.
Our internal Operational Efficiency team is dedicated to supporting our facilities management operations; they provide engineering and compliance services. These experts are embedded within our business providing electrical, water, gas, fire, CDM and planning expertise.
This specialist group plays a vital role in sharing lessons learned and best practices, hosting technical forums, and providing up-to-date guidance and training on legislation and regulatory changes. Together, they ensure our teams stay at the forefront of industry knowledge and deliver consistently high standards across all disciplines.
Enhancing the experience for customers, students and staff
Social Value is at the heart of the Skanska ethos and central to our purpose of building a better society. We create bespoke plans for every customer, student, and staff member, ensuring that the environments we shape – and the local communities they belong to – are positively impacted by everything we do.
We believe in making the campus environment the best it can be for staff and students, ensuring we are custodians of a student's 'home from home' environment.
Beyond physical spaces, we support life skills development and share the most effective solutions from across our global community to make a meaningful difference for our customers. We recognise how much the environment influences the student experience. That’s why we have embedded a strong Customer Satisfaction ethos, delivering excellence for both our customers and end users. Your views are really important to us which is why we regularly check our performance and your perceptions.
