  • Grillage in operation

Our fabrications team was appointed by Morrisroe Ltd. to fabricate and install a 105-tonne crane grillage for EDGE London Bridge, which is set to become the most sustainable office tower in the city.

Material procurement was critical to the success of this project, to meet the exacting standards of the project specifications, precision production, well planned and efficient site installation and a high-quality outcome.

Fabrications

Premium grade steel was sourced for the fabrication which took place at our Bentley Works facility in Doncaster, to the highest technical standards. There we used advanced machinery for cutting, shaping and welding the steel components. Our skilled, in-house sub arc welding (SAW) capability was used for high quality welds on the main plate girder support beams.

Before transporting the grillage to site, a full trial build of the main tower crane support beams took place in our workshop to ensure everything fitted perfectly for a seamless assembly once on site.

Installation

Due to its location on the South Bank in central London and adjacent to London Bridge Station, EDGE London Bridge is a restricted site with constraints on space and delivery logistics. Detailed planning and coordination, using ‘just in time’ principles were essential for navigating these constraints.

Once on site, the grillage components were carefully positioned and assembled, meeting the customers strict programme requirements and all technical and safety standards. The steelwork was designed so that upon dismantle it could be re-used on future projects due to its standard section sizes.

Outcome

The successful outcome of this project proudly demonstrates our fabrications team’s excellence in engineering and project management and our capability to deliver complex urban installations.
