Press release 22/01/2016 12:00 CET

Skanska has received two awards from Highways England at its Supplier Recognition Scheme awards.

Oliver Beech, Environmental and Communities advisor collects the Communities award on behalf of the M1 Junction 19 project team, Issy Maxwell, Senior HR Business Partner and Karen Bryant, HR Business Partner, collecting the Inclusion award

The scheme recognises the vital contribution made by Highways England’s suppliers who contribute to modernising, maintaining and operating England’s network of motorways and major A roads.

Skanska was awarded Highways England’s first Communities prize for its approach to community engagement at the M1 Junction 19 project. This was for its engagement and work with community groups, including regular project updates and support for local businesses affected by road closures.

Skanska also received the Inclusion award for its overall approach to diversity and inclusion. This is awarded to suppliers that have created opportunities to bring people into the workplace, developing an environment where differences are valued. Skanska was recognised for its overall approach to diversity and inclusion, including a 2020 vision and range of initiatives rolled out across its projects and supply chain.

James Richardson, Managing Director at Skanska, said: “This is great recognition for everyone involved in the M1 Junction 19 project who have really focussed on engaging and understanding the local community and responding to their needs.”

Harvey Francis, Executive Vice President at Skanska, said: “Winning the Inclusion award from a customer that shares our values and vision for improving diversity and inclusion in our industry is a fantastic achievement.

“This recognition is testament to the work we have been doing to create a culture of diversity and inclusion, not only within Skanska but with our partners and supply chain.”

Jim O’Sullivan, Chief Executive of Highways England said: “To have surpassed last year’s success is tremendous and it’s a credit to our suppliers who are demonstrating they can continuously improve to provide even better working practices and more innovative solutions.

“As we place even more emphasis on safety and customer service for all who use our network, my message to suppliers is thanks and let’s continue to improve together.

“This is good progress and we must make sure that by 2020 we can be proud of the delivery of the first Road Investment Strategy and well placed to deliver the next one.”

Note to Editor’s

This is the first time Highways England’s annual recognition scheme has been held under the recently formed government-owned company which is delivering £11 billion of improvements until 2020.

Despite a record year in 2014 with 118 entries, the 2015 scheme surpassed this with 166 entries with four small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and six members of the extended supply chain being successful among the eight key areas, the majority of these coming in partnership with our direct suppliers (also known as Tier ones).
