Volunteer gardeners have been sprucing up the outdoor areas of a residential home in Tadley, Hampshire.

Tadley volunteers tend to residential home gardens

The group, from construction firm Skanska, spent a day at Fir Tree Lodge cleaning overgrown areas in preparation for the summer.

Fir Tree Lodge is operated by the charity SeeAbility and provides care for adults with sight loss and profound multiple disabilities. Residents are supported to develop skills for a life that is as independent and meaningful as possible.

When the centre’s usual gardener fell ill, the team offered to provide hands-on help.

Skanska’s Tony Holton, who led the volunteers, said: “When I first saw this place, I was really impressed by the care and attention staff give to people. The garden was in real need of some work and thankfully my colleagues were very able and willing to come and help.

“They’ve got a fantastic space. It has the potential to provide a tremendous, outdoor sensory experience for residents and that’s why it is so important.”

During their time on site, the volunteers cleared a huge amount of leaves and removed weeds in preparation for future flower planting.

Karen Hebdon, Registered Manager at Fir Tree Lodge, said: “I'm absolutely gobsmacked by the work. Thank you to Skanska for everything they’ve done here today. They’ve been absolute stars. I know the people here are going to enjoy spending time outside over the summer.”

Tony added: “It was tiring work and we even contended with a snow shower, but it was a pleasure to help the centre and we plan to come back again soon. In the meantime, I would urge anyone with green fingers and some available time to help carry on the work at this amazing centre.”
