Railtrack has granted Kvaerner Cementation Foundations national recognition as a safety-approved independent contractor.
In securing the Core Contractors Safety Case certificate, Kvaerner Construction’s specialist piling and ground engineering company is now looking to step up its restoration and stabilisation work on Britain’s railway network.
The certificate is valid for three years, giving Kvaerner Cementation Foundations the go-ahead to compete for rail work nationally both as sub-contractor and principal contractor.
The award was described by Mike Spong, director responsible for the company’s dedicated rail unit, as “both prestigious and a privilege.” He added: “I believe we are the only piling contractor in the UK to have achieved such a position.”
The new status, earned after undergoing exhaustive and rigorous assessments to meet Railtrack requirements on safety and environmental management, means Kvaerner Cementation Foundations can now cut through many of the pre-qualification demands normally expected before a tender can be considered.
This success has been won on the strength of its previous rail work – in particular extensive embankment restoration and trackside stabilisation projects for London Underground, which has earned it technical awards and industry-wide recognition.
Last year, Kvaerner Cementation Foundation’s was among three Kvaerner Construction companies presented with a top award by the Institution of Civil Engineers for their performance in reconstructing the Horsfall rail tunnel in North Yorkshire.
Currently, the company is undertaking an urgent £1.65 million embankment stabilisation scheme on the Channel Tunnel railfreight line in Kent and is part of the Kvaerner Construction team working on a major bridge reconstruction on the east coast mainline at Newark Dyke in Nottinghamshire.
