Skanska scoops second foundation contract for hotel chain

Press release 21/08/2002 00:00 CET

Cementation Foundations Skanska, Skanska’s ground engineering specialist, is about to start another foundation contract for a new Park Plaza London hotel development.

Building on strong relationships forged during construction of the recently opened Victoria Park Plaza at Wilton Road, Cementation Foundations Skanska has now been awarded a £1.8m contract for the forthcoming Riverbank Park Plaza Hotel.

The project is on Albert Embankment and the company will install over 4000m2 of diaphragm wall and over 60 large diameter piles before handing over in the autumn.

As the site is five metres away from the viaduct that carries trains to and from Waterloo, including Eurostar, a low headroom rig will be used to construct the 13 wall panels closest to the viaduct.

In addition to the low headroom conditions, the design for nine panels has been technically challenging; in the temporary condition they will span vertically and in the permanent condition they will span horizontally. By far the most technically challenging were two 9.5m long (in plan) panels that are required to span horizontally for large service lifts.
