Early completion for Skanska’s fifth prison in five years

Press release 24/05/2001 00:00 CET

Skanska Construction has finished two months early its fifth prison in five years, enabling the custodial staff to receive valuable training at the facility, rather than off-site.

HMP Dovegate in Moreton, East Staffordshire, was built under the PFI for Premier Custodial Group and provides facilities for 800 inmates. It is the first category B prison in the UK to include a separate therapeutic community providing programmes for 200 inmates.

Skanska puts the reason for early completion down to using the same supply chain for all five prisons, managing off-site, the production of materials, and using a core design which it has developed and evolved during building of the first four prisons through operator feedback and new innovations.

Joe Mullens, Operations Director for Premier Custodial Group, said, “Skanska has built a first class prison to meet the needs of providing quality custodial services in the 21st century. They understand our business and have used their expertise to excellent effect. The quality of construction at HMP Dovegate is exceptional and is a credit to the whole team.”
