KVAERNER TO BUILD £12M SECURE TRAINING CENTRE

Press release 13/11/1998 00:00 CET

Kvaerner Construction has signed a £12 million design and construct contract with Medomsley Training Services for a 40-bed Secure Training Centre at Medomsley, near Consett in Co. Durham.

The centre, to be known as Hassockfield, is for young offenders. It will provide education and training within a secure environment and has been designed to provide good observation of trainees to reduce the risk of bullying or self harm within a durable but domestic environment.

This facility, to be built by Kvaerner Construction under the Private Finance Initiative, follows the award of a Young Offenders Institution at Pucklechurch near Bristol in the summer and prisons at Kilmarnock in Ayeshire and Lowdham Grange in Nottingham.

Sister companies, Kvaerner Technology and Kvaerner Rashleigh Weatherfoil, will also be involved providing structural and civil engineering support and mechanical and electrical installations respectively. Pre-cast concrete components will again be provided by CV Buchan Ltd. Architects for the scheme will once again be the Capita Group, operating from its Victoria offices.

In line with Kvaerner’s dominant position in the custodial marketplace, established by the record breaking completion time at Lowdham Grange Prison, the secure training centre will be completed in just ten months.
