Skanska to refurbish Cornwall’s busiest road tunnel

Press release 03/09/2002 00:00 CET

Skanska has been appointed by the Highways Agency to refurbish a 400-metre tunnel along one of the busiest sections of road in Cornwall.

The company‘s extensive refurbishment of the three lane A38 Saltash Tunnel, near Plymouth, includes resurfacing the road, installing new drainage, ventilation and lighting, plus adding secondary lining using enamel coated cladding panels.

The contract, valued at £7.5m, is similar to recent work carried out at the Dartford Tunnel, where Skanska replaced the road decks, installed new M&E equipment and carried out relining.

The project, starting this month with completion in May 2003, will take advantage of the low holiday season and night working to keep traffic disruption to a minimum. Skanska used its specialist engineering design company Skanska Technology to design the cladding and M&E elements of the contract.
