Press release 02/07/2007 00:00 CET

Skanska, in partnership with GrantRail, has today been awarded a £67 million project by Docklands Light Railway (DLR), to undertake the main construction element (package 6) of its £238 million Stratford International extension, expected to play a key role in transport plans for the 2012 Games.

Work on the scheme will start in July 2007 and is scheduled for completion in July 2010. Skanska’s share of the contract is valued at £33.5 million.

The extension will run from Stratford International to Canning Town and will be connected to the Beckton and future Woolwich Arsenal DLR routes. Key elements of the project include:

• The conversion of the former North London Line railway between Stratford International and Canning Town to DLR technology;
• Upgrading existing stations to DLR standards;
• The construction of four new stations and
• The formation of a new DLR link between Stratford and Stratford International.

This award follows the announcement in January 2007 that the Skanska GrantRail partnership had won a £39 million project (package 8) from Docklands Light Railway to carry out major civil engineering works, including track alignment and the construction of the foundations and shell of the DLR Stratford International station.

Bill Hocking, Managing Director of Skanska’s Civil Engineering Operating Unit said: “We are pleased that our performance on package 8 and our relationship with GrantRail and DLR has contributed to our success on package 6. We look forward to continuing our excellent working relationship on this project”.
