Kvaerner Construction has won a £20 million contract to construct a new loading jetty for the Ministry of Defence in Devonport, Plymouth.
The T-shaped Remote Ammunitioning Facility Tamar (RAFT) will allow conventional military weapons to be loaded onto warships and nuclear-powered submarines. It will stretch 200 metres from land and has a mooring platform 170 metres long.
The scheme includes dredging to allow submarines access to the jetty; the installation of 151 steel tubular piles up to 28 metres long; and constructing a concrete deck including cranes, generators and fenders.
Electrical services for the jetty will be supplied by Kvaerner Construction’s sister company, mechanical and electrical installation specialist Kvaerner Rashleigh Weatherfoil.
Work on site is expected to begin in November and the contract is due for completion in January 2003.
This is the second high profile contract Kvaerner Construction has secured with the Ministry of Defence in the last the last three months having been awarded a £340 million contract to redevelop and modernise its headquarters in Whitehall London.
