Press release 25/09/2012 14:00 CET

Skanska's Alex Macleod, Operations Director, Building – Central and Regions, Scotland succeeds Robert Carr, the Chairman of the law firm Anderson Strathern, who steps down after three years in the role.

Following the annual general meeting (AGM), held at the beginning of September, Alex said: “I am a proud supporter of the Chamber of Commerce movement and all it does for business. To be appointed president of the chamber in Scotland’s capital city is a great honour for me and I promise to work tirelessly during my term on behalf of all of the membership.

“I was educated in Edinburgh and I have lived in the city longer than I have lived anywhere else. I recognise the value Edinburgh has and can bring to the Scottish economy and the role its Chamber of Commerce plays in bringing economic opportunity and support to its members, prosperity and employment to the wider economy.

“At a time of uncertainty in the economy, membership of the Chamber of Commerce is an essential investment for any business, large or small.  Edinburgh Chamber has been really effective in representing its members’ interests and campaigning for a private-sector led recovery. I want to build on this reputation and the outstanding work of my predecessor, Robert Carr, for our members and for the city.”

The Chamber’s Chief Executive, David Birrell said: “The Chamber’s influence on behalf of its members and partners is considerable and members should be in no doubt of our commitment to represent their interests, save them money and bring them business. It is what this chamber has done for over 220 years and it remains our focus today. I would also like to pay tribute to the tremendous work Robert Carr has done here as President. He has represented the membership with honesty, diligence and wisdom.”
