We are building the New Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, for the Papworth NHS Foundation Trust, with completion scheduled for 2018.
In its current location, the world-renowned cardiothoracic specialist hospital cares for and treats 24,400 inpatient and day cases and nearly 73,600 outpatient cases each year. The new hospital will provide patients, staff members and the local and international community with a leading-edge healthcare facility.
Beautiful and efficient
The new hospital has been designed to combine a highly efficient clinical layout with a stunning external appearance. Set in beautifully landscaped grounds, it will capture the essence of the original tuberculosis hospital that is today’s pioneering heart and lung treatment and transplant centre of excellence.
Maximising energy efficiency
Building information modelling technology is being used to maximise energy efficiency and map all the building’s services. A clear plan of all facilities ensures that the hospital has long-term flexibility regarding the changing use of spaces. The technology is also being used to engage clinicians in the construction process and bring the building to life.
The 40,000sqm New Papworth Hospital will provide 310 beds, seven operating theatres and five catheterisation labs. We will remain on site for a minimum of 30 years post-handover. This is to allow our facilities services team to provide extensive estate management services, as well as catering, cleaning and portering.
World-class biomedical centre
The hospital is relocating to the heart of the newly forming Cambridge Biomedical Campus. The campus aims to bring together world-class biomedical research, patient care and education on a single site. This will be achieved by co-locating bio-tech companies and the 12,000-strong community of healthcare professionals and research scientists. The campus is set to become one of the world’s leading biomedical centres by 2020.
